What I have learnt over the semester

I have learnt so much since the beginning of this unit. Blogs, bookmarks, html coding, photo sharing, rss feeds, webpages and much more. Majority of the content I had never heard of let alone dabbled in. I have also realised how vast the www is. There are so many resources available text, sound and video. Blogs give everyone a voice on the net. They encourage dialogue about all topics. Blogs can be personal and intended for friends and family or for public viewing. I personally need to become more comfortable with the medium of sharing thoughts and opinions online. Delicious is a useful tool for saving all my fav sites and Flickr I can now use rather competently. Tags are common to both sites and are used for searching topics of interest.
Using iWeb to create web pages was a creative challenge. Putting together your own content and shifting layouts, you can easily spend alot of time working to achieve the look you want. I like the idea behind rss feeds they are straight to the point and good to use for backing up extra copies of files. Once you have subscribed to a feed you can read the headlines that are constantly being updated. Counters would be useful if you had a promotional site or blog. I have mastered the art of creating a link and will walk away with a new vocabulary including folksonomy, metadata ,geotagging, CSS, FTP and others already mentioned in this post. We were introduced to iview and podcasts that can streamed straight to your computer.

Everything I have learnt is absolutely relevant to right now. I really appreciated that aspect of the class.

Technorati

Technorati lets you search for other peoples blogs and allows others to search for yours in the blogosphere.Technorati searches blogs by reading all the HTML code not just the rss feed. It is different from the Google internet search engine because googles search results are ordered by a page rank. This page rank is derived from human generated links.Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The blog with the highest technorati authority is the #1 ranked blog. At present my technorati authority is 0.

Counters and RSS

Counter count how many users visit your site, the term is used in electronics and computing. Counters store and can display the number of time an event or process occurs. Some counters only measure unique hits others page views. Other web analysis tools include Benchmarking, compares where your stand in relation to a particular standard. Geo tagging finds out where your web visitors come from. Advanced segmentation, isolate and analyse web traffic, you can define your preferences as to what you would like to know about your users. Motion charts allow you to set metrics for your chart elements and compare data you have collected. Custom reports let you design, save and edit reports.
RSS, really simple syndication, generates summaries of content, the url of a site changes after clicking RSS. RSS are constantly being updated. If you subscribe to an RSS feed you will be able to keep track of these updates.

FTP

FTP (file transfer protocol)allows files to be easily shared, transferred reliably and accessed from a remote computer. The two common transfer modes are ASCII and Binary mode. Before SSL and HTTP, FTP commands and files could be accessed by other using the same network as data being transferred was not in an encrypted fashion. Some FTP services can be accessed by anyone because users do not have to have an account, they sign in anonymously using their email as there password. There is no verification process on the supplied information. This is definitely something to consider when deciding on FTP to use.

Summary

Summary of what I have learnt studying the unit MPI104. The various applications of Google encompass everything from the opportunity to check the weather to Google Earth where you can view actual footage of places. I have set up my own blog, something I was quite unfamiliar with the the beginning of the year. My blog allows others to know what I am up to and lets them add their own comments and even become followers. I can customise my blog to include photos, video and various gadgets. I have learnt new terms and definitions including metadata, interestingness and css. I now have my own Flickr page which allows me to upload and share photos with family and friends. I have a Del.ici.ous account where I can save web address, friends email addresses and join groups. I can organise my contacts using a personalised tab system. I can access my blog, flickr page and del.ici.ous account from any computer that is connected to the internet. I have learnt (basics) about building web pages and can now create a link using html.

New York, New York

Well that was a whirlwind of a trip five hours on the plane 1/2 an hour to the hotel, woke up to 'house keeping' thought s#!t I'm in New York I'd better get up and get moving. First stop,Metropolitan Museum of Art, could have spent the whole five days there, instead spent about five hours. Next Times Square hung out there for a while then caught the subway back to hotel. Day two, Downtown, Wall st, Statue of Liberty,Brooklyn and it's Museum of Art..........to be continued....

Viva Las Vegas

Wow I made it here to Vegas after a long flight. Have never flown internationally before so it was an experience. After four nights I still don't have the right sleeping pattern. Today I am going for some gambling lesson. I don't know how to play the casino games, so I am going to learn. I missed my bus stop yesterday so I stayed on the bus route untill it went back into town. It went way out, right next to trailer parks and dodgy looking areas. For all the glitz and glam it has all the smut and rot as well. I hope I win some money today. G'day to anyone following. Em

Advantages on css

The main advantage of using css is the fact that you can change the presentation of your webpage without altering the content.
Font, color, size, and all other layout elements can be changed.

Flexibility allows various presentation for on screen, in print, by voice and Braille base tactile devices.Css can edit aural text readers including speed and emphasis on particular words or phrases.

It also allows web content to be accessible to a greater number of people. This is important because the more people that can access the content the wider the audience.

The Link to my Flickr acc

more photos to come!

The Minds Ear

I've been flickr'd! I am really getting into it. I had a squizz at Wes's photos and realise how Flickr is free visual forum great for the promotion of creatives and their work. Picking your photos to upload allows you a bit of reflection time, which you don't always get with the insane pace of life. I am truly glad to have been introduced to flickr.
